Round 4 of the National Trophy saw me travel down to Sunderland for the Sunday races and weather that made this Scotsman feel right at home with all four seasons making an appearance throughout the day.
The racing was immense throughout the day and the course was tremendous including a ramp, an unusual thing in UK cross in my experience, lots of quick straights and a technical fenced section.
The mens Junior race was dominated from start to finish by Nathan Smith and the women’s junior race also being a rather one sided affair won by Ella Maclean-Howell
The women’s race started out close until the class rider of the day Amira Mellor put the hammer down to gallop away from the others, the rest of the field fought to make the fight for the leaders jerseys interesting with Abbie Manley taking the series lead after securing second place on the day.
The mens race was a fantastic spectacle with 3 riders out front most of the race making eventually coming to a 2 up sprint for the race win that had all us photographers looking at each others images to try and see who took the line first. The eventual winner Rory McGuire even admitted that even though he celebrated crossing the line he wasn’t even sure he had the win over the series leader Corran Carrick-Anderson.
Enjoy the images, I can’t wait till the next race I can make…… either the National Champs race or the last round in Yorkshire.
